Exploring Bishop Arts

Tillman's Roadhouse relaunch party in Bishop Arts, Dallas

I went to Dallas’ Bishop Arts District for the first time last month while covering the re-launch party for Tillman’s Roadhouse.

After getting the gist of the party and giving overly-detailed instructions to my photographer, I took a short tour of the neighborhood.

The First-Timers

Everyone that I met at the Tillman’s party was horrified that I have never been to Bishop Arts before.

Michael has lived in the Dallas area for 7 years and this was his first time to Bishop Arts as well. Maybe we are just the odd ones who never get out of the gayborhood?

An expensive neighborhood

Bishop Arts was a bit strange because it felt like a hipster-themed neighborhood geared towards an older, wealthy crowd. It’s as if the gentrification of the businesses happened before the surrounding housing caught up.

I got the sense that the mustached employees working at these places were probably more likely to hang out in Deep Ellum or Lower Greenville than Bishop Arts.

Then again, this was a cursory tour of an area on a random week night. Perhaps it’s different on the weekends?

Meanwhile, back in the gayborhood

The next day we found ourselves at Cedar Springs Tap House, our go-to restaurant in the gayborhood, I told one of the bartenders about the Tillman’s party and exploring Bishop Arts.

Bartender: “Where did you say it was again?”

Me: “Bishop Arts.”

Bartender: “Oh, is it cute? I’ve lived here 10 years and have never been there before.”

I guess I’m not the only one.
