Minneapolis-St. Paul / PAGU / Summer 2011 / Tader

The deposit

Kitchen laptop

We have several showings planned for today but Tader really wants to see the Stone Arch Apartments.

At $1,460, the Stone Arch unit is a little spendy, but the next cheapest place in the building is at $1,700 so we to check it out.

The management office at the building didn’t get back to Tader all week, so the plan is to show up and see if we can look at the apartment. The office manager calls as we pull into the parking lot – they leased the $1,460 and the $1,700 unit this morning. Sorry.
Our next showing is in St. Paul’s Mexican ghetto. It is a duplex with fans pumping full-blast in every room.
The apartment sounds like a giant hair dryer. Crap covers all shelf spaces a la hoarders and the rooms are tiny.

The deal breaker is in the backyard though – the unit shares a backyard with the duplex-neighbors who have a big dog and a small child. The kid’s toys are strewn all over the yard in between massive piles of dog shit. Fail. The ratty smoking woman glaring from the back porch doesn’t help.

Our next showing gets canceled because someone put down a deposit, so we end back at the Party Palace. We arrive to a family filling out applications on the porch. Tader panics. We go through the apartment again and make it clear to our Lithuanian landlady that we want this unit. We have the money. Here are our checks. Tell the other people to buzz off.

She wants $300 of the deposit in cash in case we cancel our checks, but after a trip to the ATM finally made the big move. I’m sure we’ll get approved …if Tader isn’t a felon that is…

Do the Midwest a favor and don’t support the use of the word “Spendy.” You need to take a trip back to Miami before you start posting blogs about Ice Fishing. Mina-Miami-German makes for interesting turns of phrase.
