I popped into the U.S. Botanic Garden on the National Mall recently.
The garden is in a building next to the U.S. Capitol and doesn’t charge admission, so I took a quick tour of the place earlier this week.
Although the U.S. Botanic Garden isn’t as beautiful or impressive as the Dallas World Aquarium, it was still a pleasant visit. The entire time I kept thinking, “My grandmother would love this place.”
Working our way through the monuments
We’ve been in D.C. for 6 months now and we still haven’t seen even half of the monuments, galleries, and other touristy-spots in the city.
Between school, work, and happy hour, there just seems to be an endless amount of things to do. I often feel guilty for going to a repeat bar or restaurant because our to-see list is still so long.
One of the great things about D.C. is that most of the galleries and monuments are free, so there’s never an excuse not to pop-into a place just to check it out — happy hour can wait.
Been there, did that.
The national garden was founded about 200 years ago, but has been in continuous operation since 1850 and moved to its present location in 1933.
Unlike a commercial arboretum, the Botanic Garden seems to be more education-focused, so there are less dramatic displays than you can see other places. The cacti room was the most interesting part of the place, although the tropics room is the “grand” part of the building. It’s an interesting place to bring kids, but more of a check-the-box spot for adults.
At least we can say that we’ve been? 🌱
