The Braided Sisters Mural

A mural by Jasjyot Singh Hans in Northeast Washington D.C.

I did some outdoor exploring around Northeast D.C. this weekend and came across this interesting mural by Baltimore-based illustrator Jasjyot Singh Hans

The murals are along of the Metropolitan Branch Trail in NoMa — a biking and walking trail along the train tracks between NoMa and Catholic University.

Apparently this mural was added last year as part of the Pow! Wow! DC mural festival, which is responsible for many of the noteworthy murals in the area.

Northeast D.C. will likely not obtain Wynwood District-levels of public art due to the number of new buildings, but the festival seems to encourage some developments to allow artists to transform their otherwise blank walls.

NoMa’s murals are in stark contrast to Chinatown and D.C.’s business districts, where the public art seems to be mostly in the form of official sculptures and massive smartphone billboards. (The statues are cool, but I think I prefer the murals).

More of Jasjyot Singh Hans work is on his website and Instagram. 🎨
