A new rainbow gateway sign was installed this week in the gayborhood, near the intersection of Oak Lawn Avenue and Cedar Springs Road.
The sign is immediately in front of the Centrum office tower and right by the Legacy of Love monument that was erected about 15 years ago.
The new Oak Lawn sign is… interesting.
I really love that the gayborhood has its own monuments and murals. These are very important and affirming markers of Dallas’ longstanding LGBT neighborhood.
However, this particular sign needs some more time to grow on me. Right now, it’s a strangely asymmetrical elementary school project that awkwardly faces an office building. There’s already an elegant LGBT monument at this intersection, and this addition just feels crass, poorly-executed, and unnecessary.
But I’ll probably love it next week after its probation period is over. Plus, its an upgrade to the otherwise unremarkable median. 🌈

ways to improve medians.
