I usually don’t do memes as a rule, but this one is from Molly.
“You have to tell your readers 10 things about you they may not know, but that are true.”
My 10 things after the jump.
- I started to seriously listen to music around 4th or 5th grade. I only listened to oldies for the first year or so because when I first got a radio the oldies station was the only station that wasn’t playing commercials. I don’t know why it took me that long to move the dial. I think the first cassette that I bought was “Drop Dead Gorgeous” by Republica. The first CDs I bought were “Ray of Light” by Madonna, “The Dynasty Roc La Familia” by Jay-Z, “AntiChrist Superstar” by Marilyn Manson and “Two Worlds” by ATB. And yes, the clerk in the store looked at me like I was crazy.
- Growing up, I spent most of my summers in Germany with family. We would frequently go to Holland for a week or two around my birthday. We stayed in Zandvoort, which is a resort town by the sea. In Zanfort I had my first exposure to a nude beach and discovered that only really old and/or really fat people frequent nude beaches.
- I didn’t drink in the US until I was 21 years old.1 I’ve also never smoked a cigarette or done any illegal drugs.
- My first dog was Buster. I think he was a mut, and he was uncontrollable. He was so awful that my parents gave him away when I was at school one day. My next dog was Hubert, a mini-longhaired-dappled-Dachshund. I had Hubert until freshman year of college when I moved into the dorms and my mother moved into an apartment that didn’t allow dogs. My mother was also commuting from Miami to Atlanta a lot, so making arrangements for the dog was a hassle. I think she gave Hubert to some old lady in central Florida who is currently overfeeding him.
- My childhood crush was Andre Tanneberger:
- My Freshman and Sophomore years of college were SO much fun. I was stupid, trendy, over-employed, and loving it. The last two years were sort of marred by my job as a Resident Assistant. I had a very German matter-of-factly manner that came across to Americans as caustic/toolish. So, when the matter-of-factly guy writes up a roomful of drunk freshman, the legend of the “asshole RA” is born. I eventually bought and read “First Impressions” which helped me become more relatable, but by the time I read the book my reputation preceded me. I hear people at UMiami are still bitching about the mean RA who had the nerve to write them up for drinking in the hallway. Oh well…
- I don’t have a favorite color, but Purple is my least favorite color.
- Junior year of high school I really wanted to attend Dartmouth. Everything was about Dartmouth – Dartmouth, Dartmouth, Dartmouth. Then my parents and I went on a week-long 13-college tour. Yes, we drove all the way up to Hanover, New Hampshire from Miami. My interview at Dartmouth was disastrous. The lady basically said, “Wait, you didn’t get a 1500 on the SAT. WHY AM I TALKING TO YOU?” The next school we visited was Columbia2 in New York. The second I saw Columbia I had forgotten all about Dartmouth. I applied to eight schools – UMiami, Florida International University, Georgetown, NYU, Macalester, Lafayette, Columbia, and Holy Cross. And of course, Columbia was the only school that I didn’t get into. It was between a full scholarship at Macalester, three quarters at Georgetown, and half at NYU…. And I somehow ended up at UMiami. Hm.
- I come across as antisocial to a lot of my classmates because I don’t hang out with them outside of school. I know it’s strange, but I’m slightly scandalized every time I get invited to anything by classmates. For some reason hanging out with classmates just seems wildly inappropriate3 to me. And I know it’s perfectly normal and probably a good thing to be friends with your peers, but it’s hard to say “yes” when you’re having revulsions.4
- I used to have really long hair:
And yes, the caption for this is “dur-da-dur.”
1 I had beer during my summers in Germany, but tended to stick to the non-alcoholic variety. I never had this “Woo let’s get shit-faced!” phase that most American teens go through…
2 And we went to New York the day before the Northeast Blackout of 2003…but made it to Philly (UPenn) when the outage happened.
3 Seriously, like on the level of sleeping with a professor or wearing a sweater to meet The Queen.
4 And again, there’s NOTHING wrong/repulsive about my peers aside from the fact that I think it’s weird to hang out with your classmates. I know I’m alone in this…and it’s strange because I have no problem hanging out with co-workers or random neighbors. Hm.
