Why I put ice in my wine

Iced Wine

Something glorious happened last week on The Real Housewives of Dallas – two of the cast members were gossiping by the pool and pulled out wine glasses full of ice!

I felt vindicated because I was watching the show with a big ball of ice floating in my Olivia Pope wine glass.

Although there is considerable debate, the conventional wisdom is that tossing ice in wine is tacky and ruins the flavor.

For example, on Bottle Notes:

[qodef_blockquote text=”It pains me greatly to see someone, often women, pop ice cubes into their white wine. For one, the winemaker has gone to great lengths to create a wine with body, balance, and a beginning, middle, and end that is totally disrupted when a wine is literally watered down.” title_tag=”h3″ width=”90″]

I understand the logic of “properly” chilling expensive wine, but it is silly to impose these same high-brow rules on a box of Franzia. That is akin to expecting people to drink Keystone Light out of a beer stein or Pilsner glass.

So iced wine is officially a thing, and I shall no longer be shamed for perfecting my Franzia or Sutter Home with a cube of ice or four.
