This week? Well, there were long nights at the library, phone tag (dodging actually) with JHR, three appearances at the gym, warehouse adventure in Doral, Yearbook, tests, papers, Starbucks to the point where they know my order in advance, smoothies, Final Destination 3, Night Watch, Don Carter’s, Smoothies, well, well, well.
Was out pretty late last night with JHR (walking around Wynwood, why not?) and eventually had that conversation that I’ve been avoiding for weeks.
This week was basically the fallout from Sportsfest weekend. I was exhausted and behind all week. Went to the Morgue on Wednesday and ran into my mother’s boyfriend – hello awkward. HW & such. Went to bed early all weekend… the fraternity thing fell out but the yearbook thing picked up, midterms are around the corner…

The individual in question behaves in such and such a way, adopts such and such a practical attitude, and, what is more, participates in certain regular practices which are those of the ideological apparatus on which “depend” the ideas which he has in all consciousness freely chosen as a subject. If he believes in God, he goes to Church to attend Mass, kneels, prays, confesses, does penance (once it was material in the ordinary sense of the term) and naturally repents and so on. If he believes in Duty, he will have corresponding attitudes, inscribed in ritual practices “According to correct principles.” If he believes in Justice, he will submit unconditionally to the rules of the Law, and may even protest when they are violated, sign petitions, take part in a demonstration, etc.
Throughout this schema we observe that the ideological representation of ideology is itself forced to recognize that every “subject” endowed with a “consciousness” and believing in the “ideas” that his “consciousness” inspires him and freely accepts, must “act according to his ideas,” must therefore inscribe his own ideas as a free subject in the action of his material practice. If he does not do so, “that is wicked.”
Indeed, if he does not do what he ought to do as a function of what he believes it is because he does something else, which, still as a function of the same idealist scheme, implies that he has other ideas in his head as well as those he proclaims, and that he acts according to these other ideas, as a man who is either “inconsistent” (“no one is willingly evil”) or cynical, or perverse.
In every case, the ideology of ideology thus recognizes, despite its imaginary distortion, that the “ideas” of a human subject exist in his actions, or ought to exist in his actions (however perverse) that he does perform…
Didn’t work hard enough this week, but it was sort of exciting.
I need to stop skipping around Little Havana at night.
– My guys decorated the floor. I have the coolest freshmen on campus.
– Coliseum on Friday with Delta Lambda Phi… bejesus. The dance competition was traumatic. Breasts, anorexic people, boob dance off… Janet Jackson and such. Dadeland, DSW, HIA-leah & Kendall, Hops with Micheala & Christy, Little Havana/Allahpattah, Wal-Mart with Alexandra, Movies with VI and a surprise visit to the hospital on Saturday – Stitches!
Haircut, new room layout, rushing fraternities, plans/goals, Westchester, Little Havana, Oz, Katrina’s concert, Dadeland Mall, Little Havana, …vogue-off’s, midgets, greek statues, moldy fridges, Rosewood then not Rosewood, Taco Bell, High Ropes at FIU, Karaoke (Which was actually fun!), Allahpattah…. & etc.
Ended break with a few much needed long nights.
Worst New Year’s ever.
Work, movies, and reading.
Skipping around Wynwood a lot… that needs to stop.
…plucking out fish from one tank and tossing them to another while water leaked out of my cart in front of the Art Museum… class act.
Sitting around the metrorail downtown…there were homeless people.
The semester is over.
VI brought me all that caffeine. This is why I like him.
Capote! Wandering around in the dark, tanning, gym, studying, studying, studying. I’m finishing Huxley tonight even if it kills me.
The Stalin presentation which I dedicated 45 hours in the library to – not including Monday because John and Aparna had me totally distracted – didn’t go well… blah.
– Opera was fun, although people stole our seats and bald guy next to me creeped me out.
– Denny’s is still a case study in neglect: our waiter was hostile, brought the wrong food (forgot coffee, brought tea instead of coffee, didn’t give Alex her fries, forgot Matt’s Milkshake, forgot Elsbet’s coffee, but then brought it and charged it to me, etc.)
– At Wal-Mart there was a screaming fight at the cash register: A herd of black women were screaming at a small Hispanic girl for “TAKIN THAT BUGGY WIT AN ATTITUDE” “BITCH I’LL TAKE YOU SHIT AND THROW IT ON DA GROUN! THAT BITCH NEED TO BE SMACKED!”
– We spent all of Friday night painting with Aparna till 9am. She had to do this huge banner and no one was there to help her. I kept spilling things everywhere.
– Halloween in South Beach and then clubbing. I was grotesque: zombie makeup with black base fake blood, ripped jeans. Thriller, thriller yeah. We ran into some UM people in the parking garage, hey!
– TGIFriday’s, accounting drama, The Morgue and police drama. We live in the dorms okay?
– A Turkish restaurant masquerading as a German one (we left since the one girl didn‘t get a menu), then the other German restaurant was closed, so we ended up in downtown Coral Gables at Fritz & Franz’s Bier Haus… nasty rank bathroom, brown jokes, messy middle aged blonds, and voiceovers….
– Nacho adventure… okay, see, it’s not Taco Bell without Nachos…we went to like three or four Bell’s – ended it in Little Havana “Okay what you want!?” – nothing but men-women in the cars that night. All the time.
– Party Monster with Joe at Kali’s… not that awkward, and I got animal cracker cookie.
– Downtown Miami excursion with JHR, then deep Kendall – welcome.
– Lyle likes to play “Jump the Tracks” on Bird Road. Bowling night – horrible average for me.
Hurricane Wilma ushered in the week.
Most of the freshmen were snatched home by frantic parents at the beginning of the weekend so most male floors were half empty and girl floors only had a handful of girls left when the hurricane hit Monday morning.
It was a dry hurricane and a non event for my residential college. We lost power for most of Monday but had backup generators in powering the lobby, hallway lights, and elevators. By Tuesday afternoon it was determined that no one would be electrocuted if they went outside and everyone crawled out of their dorm towers to look at the “damage”…which consisted of a bunch of downed trees.
By Tuesday evening class was canceled for the rest of the week so flights were booked and road trips were planned. By Wednesday night I only had five or six (out of 41) residents left.
“For fun? I study and go to class,” I said, realizing how stupid it sounded before I had finished saying it. But it’s true – for the past few weeks I’ve consistently (especially during the week) gone to bed at 10pm, and skipped to the gym at 6:30 in the morning.
After the gym I go to the dining hall, then the library, then class, then back to the library. I leave the library and come back to my residential college, do some RA-work (redoing the hall, fire drill inspections, meetings, programs, desk shifts, etc.) and then go to bed.
Sounds boring but few things are as interesting as working towards grad school and doing your job well.
Oh, my guys took yearbook pictures.
The yearbook people were late and unprofessional and made my guys wait so I was bitchy and mean.
My floor is better than yours.
My guys are cooler than yours.
Oh and I cleaned my room…and lost my cane card at laser quest. I like being boring.
The usual -Shady house party and then indie clubbing (poles included) in Overtown, Lasertag in North Broward, Coliseum and a Dave Chappell look-alike who insisted he was a pimp and would “fuck em! Fuck em!”, a lot of gym time, not enough study time… costume shops and banana shakes in Little Havana, Liberty City four times, the term worst paper ever, Wal-Mart, and Allahpattah.
Last week I hopped on the metro and took it to Little Havana late one evening. I milled about the river and reminded myself the nights from last summer and knew that I was failing miserably again. So I’m trying something new.
Highlights (I don’t feel like typing it all out)
– Denny’s with Katrina and Danny…and the rest of UM (including Katrina’s high roommate)
– Laying on I-95 in the middle of the night trying to get someone’s coolant tank from under my car.
I was zipping home from Miami Beach when I almost swerved into the barrier wall because half of someone’s car was in the middle of the highway. Part of it got stuck under my car. One of the guys from the accident was being an idiot and running across the highway constantly to drag car parts away…ugh…I called 911 for him then drove back to campus. The people in front of me on US-1 were obviously drunk – they hit the curve 4 times.
– So there was a fight at Taco Bell and one of the guys was looking for his earring… but the guys from the fight came back and Kali and I decided to follow them. We sped after them all through Little Havana and they then trapped us (two of the cars blocked the road and the third stopped). They all got out and banged on our car windows and Kali almost ran one of the guys down. … we drove off but they found us then we lost them. After that we went to South Beach.
– Pookie at Taco Bell.
– Steve and I being asked if we had “crack or heroin” by some drunk girls on Lincoln Road. “Hm, I don’t know, I don’t have any crack, but I have heroin.”Eariler that night at dinner Steve decided to move tables when we had already ordered drinks… and then ordered drinks with the new waiter… that led to some confusion… I kept zoning out when the waiter came and never heard a word he said… I think he thought I was disabled… I liked the massive birds at the restaurant. Could have done without the Loews drama though.
– Metrorail adventure with Kali. We took it to the Liberty City flea market, saw scary clowns, bootleg Chinese knockoffs, weave, weave, weave, oh-hell-nah foopa, a lady and three kids sleeping in the back of the shop, and guys with red-weave coloring… THEN we went to the Palmetto station, (past the serial killer’s stables) …then back to downtown Miami. We ate at Bayside’s Chili’s terrorized the mall for a while, got ice cream… then got on the metro mover and did a photoshoot (singing drunk Mexicans!) before heading back.
– The fat girl in the Mouse costume made us cry.
The metro rail driver hit on me… oh no.
