I recently had the chance to return to Georgetown Law to help with mock interviews. I get invited back to campus a few times a year either to speak on alumni panels or for networking receptions. It is always refreshing to visit campus and meet the next batch of Georgetown tax lawyers right before they start their careers.
The most recent event was a mock interview program to prep students for the Taxation Interview Program. One of my interviewees asked me how I have the time for Georgetown events. After thinking about it, I gave her the frankest answer that I could think of: “I don’t. But, you have to figure out what is important to you, and just make the time for those activities. One of the things that helped me during the LL.M. program were alumni who were generous with their time, and now I’m lucky to give back in the same way. Sure, that means I have to work this weekend or stay a little later on Monday, but that’s fine. This is all about you and getting you prepared for your interviews!”
I think she was skeptical, and convinced that the Careers office paid me to say that. (I swear they didn’t).
It was dark by the time that I left campus. The view of the clock tower reminded me of my many nights in the library, fretting about grades and job prospects (which feels like a lifetime ago). Now, I can just enjoy the campus without any of the accompanying stress: that’s for the current students. 💃
