Germany attacks, Walmart drama

Berlin Attacks

Here’s what I’m talking about today:

1. German terror attacks: A terror attack killed 12 people in Berlin yesterday. I was able to find a German newspaper’s livestream coverage of the event, which is why The Dallas Morning News had the most up-to-date English-language coverage yesterday and today. (German is my first language.)

2. Zurich mosque shooting: Meanwhile, there was a breaking shooting situation in Zurich, Switzerland, which I also covered for the paper. I was glad to be using my German-language skills at work, I just wish it was for something less grizzly.

3. Walmart: Speaking of grizzly, a decapitated body was found at a New Mexico Walmart yesterday.

There is currently a campaign in the Dallas area to get cities to start fining Walmart for excessive police calls. Many accuse Walmart of outsourcing its security costs to taxpayers by relying on police departments instead of onsite security. A longform piece in Bloomberg magazine shows exactly how this works.

Ambassador assassination: Speaking German also came in handy for our coverage of a Russian ambassador being assassinated in Turkey on live TV yesterday.

Turkey issued a media blackout right after the attack, but German-language reports kept coming from the region. (Turks are the biggest ethnic minority in Germany, hence the intense coverage in Germany.)

5. Outages: This blog and the website kept crashing yesterday and today. I think that’s resolved now (Sorry about it!)
