The Howard Theatre is one of the many venues in Washington DC that put up Black Lives Matter signs this summer.
It is easy for BLM signage at a large venue to feel like performative wokeness. That’s not the case with the Howard Theatre, which served as a launching pad for black performers for over a century.
I’ve only had the opportunity to go to the Howard Theatre once for a LGBT fundraiser. However, I know that even if the BLM signs are eventually taken down, this venue knows that BLM isn’t a fad and will retain its commitment to supporting DC’s minority communities.
