Jansen goes to Washington

After almost two years in Dallas, I’m getting ready for a new adventure — this time in Washington D.C.!

Michael is transferring to the Thomson Reuters office in D.C., meanwhile I have been accepted into the Taxation LL.M. program at Georgetown University Law Center. (The LL.M. is a 1-year tax law program with post-graduation job applications starting this month.)

It’s going to be an intense year of learning both inside and outside of the classroom — which is a long-winded way of saying we are totally going to all of the monuments and museums!

A (mostly) new experience

I have only been to D.C. twice — once to visit Georgetown University for a college tour and for a middle school field trip that I barely remember.

Many of my coworkers have spent time in D.C. and everyone has good things to say about it — plus our friend Krystal already lives in the city and loves it. 

D.C. is also one of few cities that gay people universally have good things to say about, so I have high expectations.

The move

Finding an apartment in D.C. took way longer than finding my first place in Dallas.

Michael and I quickly realized that we couldn’t afford DuPont Circle (the gayborhood) and many of the apartments charged exorbitant parking (and amenity!) fees. We found a place that will do for the year, but we may move closer to DuPont later on — particularly if we decide to get rid of our cars.

In the meantime, I’m going to have to reacquaint myself with public transportation. Apparently D.C.’s public transit is way better than Dallas’ underwhelming bus system.

We drive out for D.C. this weekend, with a stop in Nashville. Hopefully this goes smoother than my Oregon Trail trip down to Dallas.

It has been a hilarious (and muggy) two years in Dallas, but I’m excited for a new adventure.
