Like the rest the country, I first came across Adnan Syed’s case by listening to the Serial podcast.
Adnan Syed was convicted of the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. His conviction mostly rested on the ever-changing testimony of an alleged co-conspirator and unreliable cellphone records.
I kept tracking Adnan’s case through the Undisclosed, a spinoff podcast hosted by Rabia Chaudry, an attorney who is also one of Adnan’s family friends.
Serial is an amazing example of true-crime storytelling, but Undisclosed gets into the legal weeds, which I love. This shouldn’t be surprising, since I was that kid who preferred the courtroom scenes of Law & Order…
Undisclosed exposes countless examples of police and prosecutorial misconduct during the Adnan Syed trial. I typically listen to Undisclosed during my Katy Trail dog walks, and I cannot count the number of times where I have gasped aloud at the bombs dropped by Undisclosed.
This week Undisclosed got even more interesting as Rabia started live-reporting court hearings which will determine whether Adnan will receive a new trial. Every morning, I eagerly refresh my phone’s TuneIn Radio app list to see whether the new Undisclosed episode is there.
It feels like a return to my middle school days when I would watch Court TV for hours on end. Legal geekery at its finest.
I also imagine this is how old ladies used to await new radio soap opera episodes.
At this point, it seems implausible that Adnan won’t get a second trial, although stranger things have happened. We’ll know more on Monday’s episode!
