Ten years ago I was in Miami, applying to the University of Minnesota Law School. I would have had a hard time believing that a decade later, I would be getting sworn in as a Texas attorney in Washington D.C.
Getting sworn in at Georgetown Law
I completed one of my LL.M. finals at the Georgetown Law campus today. After the final, I checked the Texas Bar website and saw that they finally processed my MPRE score!
I quickly paid my bar dues and printed out the Texas oath. There’s a notary right outside of the graduate school offices so that’s where I was sworn in. Less than glamorous, but it works.
I’m officially a lawyer!
A long time coming
Waiting so long to get licensed didn’t hinder my post-law school career because all of my positions at Thomson Reuters were J.D.-preferred. However, I am grateful that I no longer have to correct people who call me a lawyer or watch people’s eyes glaze over as I explain the difference between a J.D.-preferred/required position and practicing law.
Now I just have to worry about reminding people that I’m not their attorney, nor can I help with Cousin Ed’s convoluted criminal law issues.
I’ll likely apply to transfer into D.C. next semester, but first I have to worry about finishing these finals.
However, tonight we’ll celebrate! 🥂
