Here’s what I’m talking about this morning.
1. Education fraud: Bloomberg has an interesting article about how Silicon Valley coding bootcamps attract students using false / misleading employment and salary statistics, and fail to prepare students for the job market.
Sounds a lot like law school…
Although many of my former classmates are still practicing law, a huge chunk also fell off the face of the earth after graduation (presumably because they didn’t get jobs.)
These students are conveniently never mentioned on school websites or forums, and are forgotten by everyone except for the student loan companies.
2. Rawlings files a lawsuit: The Dallas mayor filed a lawsuit against the city’s Police and Fire Pension fund yesterday. This is the fund that threatens to bankrupt the city because it was mismanaged and allows participants to take lump-sum payments. TBD on whether this goes anywhere.
3. That police drama at iLume: Was much more boring than you think.
4. High school: Some people never grow out of it.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed this strange one-upmanship in the gay community. The most extreme example of this happened at a local cocktail lounge recently where a 40-something “friend-of-a-friend” all but asked everyone in my group how much money we make.
That guy was more honest than most status-queens, because he drunkenly declared that “Status matters!”
I’m not sure that any of us agreed.
Bless his heart.
I think that truly self-confident people do things for their own benefit instead of to impress others. And if you’re overly focused on what other people do or have, you probably don’t have enough going on in your own life.
5. Lizzo: She’s still a thing.
Lizzo was a pretty well-known rapper in Minneapolis back in the day, and she’s becoming increasingly popular in places like Texas. It’s nice to see someone who’s stuck with it.
