A “funeral” was held for Redfield’s Tavern over the weekend to commemorate the end of the restaurant (for the gay community at least).
The Dallas Morning News published a story yesterday confirming the owners’ homophobic remarks that were secretly recorded by a former employee. The backlash to the recording was swift — the gays boycotted, the staff quit en masse, and the business collapsed.
A group of protestors showed up on Saturday for the “funeral” in front of the closed restaurant (which already had its sign painted over). Although the restaurant was shuttered, we stood outside and swapped stories as people drove by to honk in support.
Even though the group who stood outside of the bar was small, I think it was important to show up to demonstrate that we will not tolerate homophobia in the gayborhood’s backyard.
It was a sad end our favorite hangout spot, but we’ll see some of the regulars again at other places around the gayborhood.
Hopefully the venue will reopen next year with less problematic ownership. But for now, we just have to be grateful for the time that we had here, and the people that we were able to meet in our first months back in Dallas. 🍻
