These rusty sculptures are one of the strangest examples of public art that I have encountered recently.

The sculptures are in a park near my apartment and the dogs seem to like them. The huge pieces change shape depending on your vantage point and often look like oversized rolls of pennies.
I have encountered many other rust-prone sculptures over the years — mostly at universities. I always wonder whether the rust is intentional or a result of poor sealants.

No spray-painting
One surprising thing about Washington D.C. is the lack of meaningful graffiti art around the city. There are plenty of sculptures, art installations, and murals, but unsanctioned street art in the city seems to be limited to lackluster stickering attempts.
It’s possible that I have just not found the right spots in the city, or that the graffiti is so well-done that it looks official. However I suspect there are actually fewer unsanctioned public art displays here than other places.
Perhaps the rusty sculptures are the consolation prize. 🏆
