Contrary to popular belief, I don’t ignore movie recommendations.
It may take me a while to see a particular movie, but I inevitably do. (With the exception of Frozen, which I am boycotting.)
A few months ago, a friend recommended Tangerine to me, and I finally got around to watching it.
It’s sad and hilarious.
Tangerine is about a transgender sex worker named Sin-Dee Rella. She gets released from jail and spends Christmas Eve storming throughout Hollywood looking for her cheating boyfriend.
Although the plot is thin, the ridiculous characters and seedy Hollywood street life make it entertaining. I recommend watching it on Amazon.com, where we were able to rent it for $0.99.
There is a drug motel scene in the movie that reminds me a lot of Florence + Machines’ epic Delilah music video, which I had on repeat during my last months in Minnesota.
Tangerine also reminded me of some real-life characters from Dallas and Minneapolis.
Oak Lawn has quite a few semi-homeless residents who probably lead lives similar to the film’s characters.
Minneapolis had some similar characters who were sometimes in the bars, usually trying to bum drinks.
The world that these people inhabit is a little depressing, and frankly not that interesting – a never-ending cycle of addiction and poverty, marked by the fantasy that someone will come and rescue them from it.
Then again, I know some non-homeless individuals who have the same issues. Perhaps that lifestyle is more common than I thought?
