I’ve realized (quite late actually) that the majority of law student blogs seem to be written by anonymous authors.
I’ve moved around a lot (countries, states, and social circles) and blog “to keep in touch” with former friends/acquaintances that care to look me up.
The vast majority of people who read my blog are people who I no longer have daily contact with, but who know who I am.
I plan on keeping my general “what I did today” blog throughout law school, but I’m wondering if that’s such a keen idea for this blog. I couldn’t have great categories like “professor son of a bitch.”
Not that I’d ever even think that about a professor.
Gasp!
But seriously, I wouldn’t waste my time writing malicious crap anyway and wouldn’t write anything that I wouldn’t want my name attached to – so how important is anonymity?
Will I be out an important job or internship because of my digital footprint?

June 4, 2008 at 4:08 pmI’m questioning the whole anonymity thing too. So far I’m choosing to stick with it so that I can rant about annoying law students or scary prof moments. Over time things may change.

June 23, 2008 at 2:36 pmIt all depends on what you’re writing and what flexibility you want when you write.
I chose anonymity because it enables me to not worry about criticizing my school, my professors, etc. I also don’t need to worry about my online identity which I actually guard quite religiously. (Though, I’ll admit, some days I’d prefer to be “out of the closet,” in the blogging sense of the word.)
However, anonymity has definite shortcomings. There’s something to be said for transparency and accessibility as values of the Web. You can’t get those with anonymity. Plus, if you’re writing good stuff you may want people to give you credit for it. (see e.g. Life of a Law Student who sought to use his blog to make a name for himself as a knowledgeable IP expert/student).
