I put in a lot of commuting miles this week.
My mornings usually begin at 8 a.m. in a St. Paul courthouse because I clerk at the St. Paul Public Defender’s office. I spend my time observing clerks and attorneys interview clients and prepare for bail hearings because my student certification has not gone through yet.
The St. Paul courthouse is way nicer than Anoka, but there are obvious similarities in the client base. Several of the female defendants like my Tyra contracts.
After court, I drive to the tax law clinic for a few hours, and then jet down to the suburbs to the office.
I usually can’t stay super late at the office because I have tax preparation training back in St. Paul in the evenings.
It’s a 13 to 14-hour schedule, but I am learning a lot. I am learning how to communicate effectively with the IRS, prepare self-employment tax returns, and prepare arguments for bail hearings. My cup of knowledge runneth over – can someone fetch me a mop?
