This weekend’s apartment hunt turned ugly today when dozens of building managers and real estate agents called us back. The theme? The Rottweiler is a deal breaker.
Dog-friendly does not mean Rottweiler-friendly. Rottweilers are at the top of everyone’s breed restriction list and I think I was rejected by every major downtown St. Paul apartment building today. It felt like trying to find an apartment for the pedobear or something.
I was also shocked by the some of the prices and income restrictions around town. For example, chi-chi apartments in my neighborhood rent for $2,100-$2,800. That is enough to rent a massive apartment in downtown Miami.
The rent-control properties are another issue. One place in downtown St. Paul had a $40,000 income ceiling for a two-person unit that rents for $1,200. If my boyfriend and I only made $40,000 then I would consider $1,200 far beyond our means.
The search has turned to twitter referrals and real estate agents. There are still a few more weeks left before I have to start finding new homes for the dogs. Hopefully it doesn’t get to that point.
