The Circus Down the Block

Brett Kavanaugh street art in Washington D.C.

I’m used to seeing Trump-related graffiti around town, but Brett Kavanaugh is the new street art muse lately.

One of the strangest things about living in Washington D.C. is that national dramas constantly unfold only a few blocks away. Whether it’s on Capitol Hill or in the White House, there’s typically a saga (or comedy of errors) playing out within blocks of my office.

I wonder if this is what medieval peasants felt like — you can see the physical structure of the palace, but the palace intrigue has nothing to do with your day-to-day life. Heck, I usually don’t know if there’s a protest going on in town unless I see something about it on Twitter.

Kavanaugh street-art and isolated protests aside, it’s useful to remember that D.C. is a major city where the vast majority of people aren’t journalists or political appointees, but rather spectators via Twitter and CNN like everyone else. 🕊️
