A Tale of Two Dog Walks

Gunter and Ingrid during the first Washington D.C. snow storm of the season.

The District got its first snow storm of the season today and my dogs have two completely different opinions on the slushy mix.

Ingrid’s feeling her oats.

Ingrid is invigorated by the winter weather: she eats the snow, frolics in it, and generally loves chasing after the flakes.

She could actually be outside all day, so long as she gets dried off immediately when we get back into the apartment.

Meanwhile, Gunter is unamused.

As a chihuahua mix, he hates the snow and walks under protest anytime it gets below 50 degrees.

When we used to live in St. Paul, Gunter refused to even poop outside during the winter — instead preferring to sneak dumps in the closet (specifically, my shoes) at night.

That didn’t last long however.

It felt like being on two different dog walks this morning.

The good news for Gunter is that today’s snow is supposed to morph into frozen rain this afternoon, so he won’t have to truly begin his winter protest just yet.

My coworkers and I also have dramatically different outlooks on the snow. When they complain about the snow and cold I just roll my eyes and remind that I am a veteran of Minnesota, where the true terror awaits.

I’m sure they are sick of my war stories, but it’s never a bad thing to remember that winter could always be worse. ❄️
