Rethinking the Gym

Gyms recently opened back up in the District for the first time since the lockdown began, but I am not sure when I’ll be back.

I was on a workout kick right before things shut down due to the virus. However, unlike my neighbors who workout in front of the apartment building every morning, I abandoned serious exercise during quarantine.

This spring I had a chance to preview new gym in Chinatown called “Byndfit.” It is a high-end gym offering unlimited classes and a cycling studio with an IMAX-like screen.

The gym preview session was my first-ever spin class, and it wore me out. I decided to join the gym, but luckily procrastinated enough to avoid paying a deposit before things shut down.

I am not sure how safe it is to go back to the gym.

Most of the gyms that I have access to are poorly ventilated and too small to keep a 6-foot distance from everyone. People did not consistently wipe-down equipment or use towels in the before-times, so I have little faith that things are significantly more sanitary now. My apartment building gym also has limited operational hours, guaranteeing that it will be packed at all times.

I was a sweaty, coughing hot mess after my first cycling class at the Chinatown gym. If others work out that hard, I suspect gyms will be unsafe for a while. That’s why I’ll stick to the long walks outside for now.

Or, maybe I’ll ask to join my more disciplined neighbors in their outdoor workouts in front of the building. 🏋️
