Best Week Ever #10

The ice has arrived. It legitimately snowed early last week, but for the rest of the week we got sparse, gnat-like snow.

Wednesday was definitely my busiest day –a combination of class, SSG, meetings, and intermittent study time – A straight shot from 8am-9pm.

Thursday was my first law school networking experience – the school brought in 100 alumni from firms throughout the area. The lawyers were at tables throughout the first level of the school and divided up by practice type: corporate, IP/patent, public/academic.

I didn’t expect to find networking so much fun. I met interesting local attorneys and learned about what they actually do. I spoke with public defenders, corporate litigators, contract lawyers, law librarians, and, and, and… one new thing I learned about was billable hours requirements. Every lawyer (save the librarian) talked about this.

I was confused by the law librarian – a JD and MA in library science to make in the $40,000 range? I’d never pay off my debt… there has to be some debt forgiveness program… otherwise the career would be financially infeasible unless you were independently wealthy or on a hefty scholarship.

Most of the lawyers asked me a variant of, “So, how are you holding up?” I told them that law school was relatively stress free, and definitely less stress than undergrad.

“All I have to do is prepare for class and make sure I’m following along. My grades are based on my finals, which I have all semester to prepare for. The casebooks, classes, and classmates are interesting. Law school is pretty fun.”

While law school is “more” work than undergrad, it’s more rewarding as well. But then again I spent the last three years reading over 300 pages a week (history/literature major) and getting bitched at and demonized by belligerent freshmen…

I digress.

Friday I went to Mall of America and saw The Changeling, which was amazing…

A bit of a tear jerker…but compelling (to use a movie review cliché)… I also saw another movie this weekend: “House.”

House has every horror movie cliché you can think of. Seriously. There’s the creepy haunted house (of course), the 1800’s style ghost family with creepy son, leaking faucets, storms, random creaks, gross food, insects, creepy kids, “mysterious pasts”, demon worship, random masked killer, odd editing, shrill-tense music, flooded basements, non-reflecting mirrors… oh, and devil worship…(you thought I was kidding)

And (of course) we have the stock characters: The blond bombshell. The temptress. The Meat-head. The shady police officer. Etc.

Um. Yeah. At least it was a warmup for my torts reading on Sunday.

I spent some time this weekend at the Hennepin library, which is the study spot of the moment – although I can imagine myself staying closer to the law school once it gets colder…
