The Fall

Lowertown Drunk Homeless Man

Mitchell and I are walking the dogs in Mears Park when we hear a thud.

We and several other dog walkers run over to a man splayed out in the middle of the park.

The man is unconscious and turning blue.

I dial 911.

There is a homeless guy who appears to be pickpocketing the drunkard. He claims that the drunkard asked him for the time before passing out, but his story keeps evolving as he repeats it for each new onlooker.

The homeless guy scurries away long before the police arrive. It takes over 10 minutes for the paramedics to get to the park.

The police officers look bored, and do not care that the drunkard was probably mugged.
Me: “I’m pretty sure that guy stole his cell phone.”
Cop: “I’m not worried about it. All of those drunk guys hang out together.”
Me: “The homeless guy was really clear about not knowing him.”
Cop: “Whatever.”
We watch the paramedics revive the drunkard and cart him off. A few of the dog walkers stayed and exchanged stories – we have all seen people arrested or unconscious in the park.

It looks like the tourists are back.
