First Impressions of Washington D.C.

We’ve been in Washington D.C. for about two weeks and it’s fabulous.

Classes started and I am already well-acquainted with the law library.

The LL.M. program is going to be challenging, but it’s also a luxury to focus on nothing but tax law for two semesters. My J.D. program felt like a hodgepodge of different topics at times, whereas my LL.M. classes are clearly interrelated and cover much deeper material. We’ll see how I feel in a few weeks.

Washington D.C. is beautiful and dense. The lack of tall skyscrapers for landmarks makes it difficult to navigate at times. I’ll eventually figure out the grid system.

The streets are very diverse and busy without being crowded. There are tourists with cameras, people wearing suits, baseball jerseys, children running on the subway, and very aggressive panhandlers.

Many areas of town are busy late into the night, but there’s always the looming threat of getting mugged — so I guess it’s like any other large American city, just with more museums than most.

The pop-up bar

There’s a Game of Thrones pop-up bar in D.C., but we will probably never make it inside. The line was 200-people deep every time we’ve walked by it and I can’t justify waiting two hours in line for an expensive novelty bar.

The epic line of this bar feels like some sort of strange social experiment — the wait is so long that people order pizza for delivery while standing in line. To me that’s a clear sign that the line is a terrible idea, but hundreds of others are undeterred.

Exploring brunch options

We’ve tried a few brunch spots around town, however drag brunch remains elusive. Most of the drag brunch spots in D.C. are booked two weeks in advance and we haven’t been that organized yet.

Last weekend a big group of us went to Oz Restaurant and Bar in Arlington, which is owned by one of the Real Housewives of Potomac and her husband. Sadly, Ashley Darby wasn’t at the restaurant and mimosas were our consolation prize.

Oz offers bottomless brunch for groups of 6+, so we probably ate way too much.

The occasion was Brody’s 30th birthday bash — he’s in town from Minneapolis for the party. Richard (who I know from way back in Miami) joined us as well and met the Minnesota crew. There are so many friends that I’ve met over the years who now live in the city and I look forward to many more of these reunions.

I’ve even run into old friends on the streets of D.C. already, which proves that it’s a small world after all. 🎶 🎶 🎶

The week ahead

I start an externship at a law firm in a few weeks, which means that my schedule for the semester is unresolved at the moment. I’m taking the opportunity to get a head start on my classes and to coax myself into going to the gym. There’s a new gym at my apartment building and the law center, so there’s really no excuse.

Workout

It’s highly unlikely that I’ll make time for sightseeing during the week, so I need to make the most of the upcoming weekends before it gets cold.  We’ll see how this goes.
