The Intensity

Suit hanging

“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. What we do with this hour, and that one, is what we are doing.”
That quote is from one of the many writing books that clutter my shelves: “The Writing Life” by Anne Dillard.

It should be etched above every monument and public school entrance.

Advice from writers is usually a variant on “cut the bullshit and establish a positive routine.”

That particular Anne Dillard quote is about the importance of keeping a schedule to accomplish a goal.

Although I don’t plan every minute of my day like Cal Newport, I have fallen into a fairly rigid schedule over the past few weeks.

I’ve also relapsed into the intensity that I have not felt since law school – it’s a persistent state of nervous analysis, ruthless efficiency, and too much coffee.

I’m not sure if I’m back, or just stepped backward.

Although the fact that I’m asking myself these things means I’m probably okay.

Just probably.
