The Islanders

We moved to Galveston Island!

The dogs and I are the newest residents of Galveston, Texas.

Galveston is a Houston exurb located on a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico. It has a historic downtown, cruise ship terminals and resort hotels along the beach. It has all of the amenities of a proper city (Target, Walmart, Starbucks, Kroger, and gay bars). So we can enjoy morning dog walks on the beach without breaking the bank at tourist spots.

Moving is one of those all-consuming personal dramas that no one else really cares about unless you are moving across the country. However, the last month or so has been an interesting mix of apartment tours, trips to the junkyard, and Cinderella-like scrubbing. And it’s finally over (for now)!

I initially tried to find apartment buildings in downtown Houston near my office, but the options were severely limited. Buildings were either exorbitantly expensive or had nightmarish reviews. That trend continued when I expanded by search to nearby neighborhoods like Montrose. A common theme is that many new buildings in Houston apparently have serious construction flaws leading to issues like black mold and flooding. Others had great reviews but were exorbitantly expensive. Lots of obstructed views as well.

The search eventually expanded so far out that I thought — if I’m going to be in traffic on the way to work, then why not live on the beach? So here we are. 🌴
