The NoMa Tent City

NoMa tent city.

My apartment building has a shuttle to the NoMA Metro Station during the weekdays, which means that I pass the “Rain” art installation almost every day. Rain is a series of changing lights that illuminate the underside of the M Street NE underpass near Red Bear Brewing.

Rain also illuminates a tent city that straddles either side of M Street. It is sad and awkward that a tent city is in the middle of a neighborhood of gleaming new towers and underneath a $2 million art installation. I occasionally give the tent city residents food and cash, but most days I’m just awkwardly avoiding eye contact while people scream at each other in the street. Thankfully, there are usually other people from my building waiting for the shuttle, so there’s safety in numbers.
