We are still faithfully watching The Real Housewives of Dallas.
Somehow.
Real Housewives aired immediately following RuPaul’s Drag Race, which made the show really easy to add to our Monday night watch parties.
A bar down the street (called Brick) even hosted dual Drag Race / Housewives watch parties for a while. We attended one of the Brick watch parties, but the vibe was strange so we never went back. It felt like the Housewives event was encroaching on the bar karaoke plans of the grizzled regulars (and who are we to stand in the way?)
The Brick watch parties were canceled around the same time that the Housewives cast announced a watch party at a competing nightclub called JR’s. Perhaps this is a coincidence, and the Brick watch party was just canceled due to poor attendance. Maybe karaoke won out?
I also think the one-off JR’s event was strange, because it seems like this was the only Real Housewives watch party that JR’s hosted this season…
Anyway, we eventually took our Housewives viewing in-house, by hosting watch parties in our building’s media room. It was more intimate (and far cheaper) to watch the Monday-night shows downstairs with our neighbors.
The fun did not last.
Our iLume Park watch parties abruptly ended when our building started locking the lobby at 6 p.m. This is part of a longstanding trend of reduced amenities (and maintenance) at this complex.
The lobby-lockdown meant that we were forced to watch Drag Race at a bar once again. Housewives of Dallas was then relegated to Tuesdays, when we could catch it on-demand.
Watching Real Housewives of Dallas has been a strange experience.
I love playing the “name that location” game and it is fun seeing the cast members make appearances at events in the Gayborhood.
But overall, the show is boring and I would not watch it if it took place in another city. This is depressing, because I think Dallas is a fabulous setting for the franchise.
One bright spot in our depressing Dallas Housewives season is the D Magazine recap written by Tim Rogers. I think at this point we are watching the show just so we have context for Tim’s columns.
Hopefully they give the Dallas franchise another season to redeem itself. If not, at least Dallas got a shot.
