A trip to Virginia Wine Country

The outdoor areas of Quattro Goombas Winery in Middleburg, Virginia

My knowledge of wine is limited, so when people say that they are going to “wine country,” I assume that they are headed to Napa or Europe. Apparently Virginia has a wine country as well, which we explored on a recent day trip to Middleburg, VA.

Our first stop was Quattro Goomba’s — a winery about 40 miles away from Washington D.C.

Quattro Goomba’s also has a brewery. That is where we spent most of our time because: beer > wine (particularly on muggy weekends.)

Beer among the children

Quattro Goomba’s is a very family-friendly place that bans tour buses. There are large open spaces with dogs and children running around.

The venue isn’t a glorified daycare however – it feels like being at a backyard party that happens to have kids rather than a children’s party that happens to have wine. We didn’t feel out of place as a childless group of four.

The only awkward moment was deciding whether we would go back for second round order of wine slushies (we didn’t.)

Exploring Middleburg

I chatted up one of the bartenders at Quattro Goomba’s because she had a University of Minnesota shirt on. She recommended touring a nearby town called Middleburg, so we headed there after the brewery.

Middleburg is a quaint town that reminded me a lot of the Boston-exurbs where Aaron got married. There were some very pricey boutiques and restaurants, as well as a distillery where we had a cordials flight.

The drive back to town felt long, but we arrived back before dark. We only realized after we got back that we had done a day in Virginia wine country without actually having any wine (aside from the slushies).

Maybe next time. 🍷
