Time for a new boomkat list. I’m feeling inspired.
It’s all about Katy B right now. Actually, most of the top 20 songs for me right now are from England. Weird times.
Track list after the jump.
It’s become a tradition in these parts: there is my year-end music list. Did I leave anyone out?
It’s time for another list of the songs that make me shimmy and shake.
Let’s start with Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine. It’s like Emily Haines and Sarah Ferguson had a baby that decided to take after Lady Gaga. I’m obsessed with Florence’s “The Dog Days are Over” and live most of my life with that song on repeat. Here is a live version:
I’m absolutely obsessed with this song:
I love it. I play it multiple times a day and do hip-shimmies around the apartment. I don’t have a problem.
And it turns out that I have not done a boomkat list since last May! My boomkat lists are usually a little tardy for the party, but this is just downright egregious. My apologies.
For my new readers who don’t know what a “boomkat list” is – it is my periodic music chart, which lets me track and share the songs that make me shimmy and shake.
How else can I remember that last year I was obsessed with the Crystal Castles Remix of Death? I completely forgot about that song…. anyhoot, this is what listened to this summer:
A reader pointed out that I got lax on my boomkat lists. Sorry. The playlist is here:
No, I haven’t ignored your tweets about the next boomkat list…I’ve just been, well, forgetful. Blame finals.
But it’s summer, and I’m back on it. Here are the top 20 songs of the moment, according to me:
I just skated for 12 miles around the lakes, went grocery shopping, thrashed laundry around, walked the dogs…
…and earlier I scrubbed my kitchen. I’m about to tackle more laundry before cooking. That’s why this video is PERFECT:
These are the songs that made me shimmy and shake this week:
These are the songs that made me shimmy and shake these past two weeks:
The Black Eyed Peas are usually too cheesy and contrived for my tastes, but I love the beat for “Imma be” and the song is on full blast every time it comes on my car’s radio.
Hot Chip reigns outside of the car. I first heard “take it in” on The Current and it’s been on repeat ever since.
Video Phone is still near the top of the list, but I am still shocked that it doesn’t get any radio play in Minneapolis. Maybe the Lady Gaga version is too long for radio play?
These are the songs that made me shimmy and shake this week:
Late as heck…
Jansen’s music charts: the songs that made me want to shimmy and shake this week.
These are the 25 songs that I started my teens with. Quite a few of these are still the jam.
My first concert was a Slipknot show in Kansas. That was amazing. The band was an hour late so girls in the audience randomly got on stage and started flashing. As a 13 year-old living in Wichita, I could have not possibly have felt more badass at that moment.
Toktok vs. Soffy O started my love of electro-music, and I’ve always had a soft spot for the cheesy disco-house like Phats & Small’s “Turn Around.”
I heard “Turn Around” for the first time while vacationing in Zandvoort. That was an important vacation, because while in Zandvoort I was also exposed to ATB (Don’t Stop and 9pm/Till I come) and ATB quickly became my favorite DJ. Probably because a huge crush on him.
Dreamy.

I’m reliving orientation as an orientation assistant. The law school is really responsive to student feedback, so a lot of the boring and useless things from last year’s orientation were axed. Some of the 1Ls were still bored, but they have no idea how much better their orientation is.
Besides an awkward, overlong vegetable analogy, orientation has gone well. None of the speakers said anything crazy and none of the 1Ls irreparably embarrassed themselves. I think asking for anything more is unrealistic.
We even did a quick etiquette session in my orientation group where the other orientation leaders and I told the 1Ls how not to be obnoxious.
I figure if my 1Ls can avoid doing those five things, they’ll be fine.
I thought about writing a grand “1L summer retrospective” post, but that would be duplicative of my “one year in Minnesota” post and way too exhausting to do right now, so, quickly, the highlights of summer:
The summer was hilarious, but I’m ready to start the school year.
