Florence + The Machine released a film!
Although there were no Lemonade-style watch parties, The Odyssey is still pretty interesting. There are a lot of grimy Los Angeles scenes, and an unexpected trek to rural Scotland.

We spent our time chowing down on Gardein and watching TV.
This is what 29 looks like.
One of the best things about the new apartment is that we have HBO Go, which means that I finally got an opportunity to watch the Beyonce On The Run Tour special.
The timing for my Beyonce binge was perfect because she’s apparently going to release a new video album/TV special/whatever-the-hell soon:
I am so excited.
This must be how diehard Apple fans feel when a new product is about to be launched.
However, the brooding preview video looks like the silly clips that preceded Rihanna’s ANTI album.
I recently played music at a friend’s birthday party and I was shocked that no one recognized the majority of my songs.
For example, no one had heard of Sam Lao, who is the hottest artist in Dallas right now. I was horrified!
Growing up, music was a more communal experience. You knew what was on the radio and MTV. That was pretty much it.
Although we will always recognize the new songs from Beyonce or Rihanna, I don’t think we share enough music with each other. So, in the interest of oversharing, here are my top 10 songs of the moment.
What hasn’t been said about Florence + The Machine? Her new album is everything.
How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful got me through my last breakup and the long road to Dallas.
There are so many great tracks on the album, but Delilah is definitely one of my favorites.
I didn’t know what to expect from this video, but a trip to a Los Angeles meth motel wasn’t one of them.
The song is chaotic, shrill, and a perfect way to start a wild evening. (I also really want to learn those dance moves!)
I first heard of Kaleena Zanders after seeing her on a Madeaux track earlier this year.
This Teairra Mari lookalike has some serious pipes, which are perfect for the type of house music she typically performs.
“Hit the Dance Floor” is basically on repeat when I’m getting ready to go out on the weekends.
I’m on the bus to work when I check my Gmail. I see a message from the apartment building in Dallas. It says that my application has been approved, and that I have 3 days to sign my lease.
After almost spilling my coffee on the bus, I frantically navigate the decisively non-mobile-friendly leasing website on my phone. I e-sign the documents, and then email the leasing agent.
I spend the morning in a crappy mood because I’m convinced that I botched my rental application. I surely lost my deposit and have to start my apartment search all over again.
Here are my favorite songs of 2013:
Banks’ entire album was basically on repeat during my trip to Iowa this summer. This remix was playing when I got pulled over and slapped with a speeding ticket.
I couldn’t resist.
If 2011 was the year of ghetto anthems, then 2012 was the year of hipster nonsense, and I loved every minute of it.
So the group went to the 331 Club, which is right down the street from my apartment in Northeast Minneapolis.
It’s a very claustrophobic place. Hipsters are everywhere with crazy tattoos, backpacks, and scruff. I was surprised by how loud the music was and how pushy the people were. The hipsters just shoved their way through the crowd in a manner that would cause some Basketball Wives drink throwing at the Gay 90’s.
These are the songs making me shimmy and shake right now:
Technology failed me during these past two weeks. This is how I started the morning:
If you soften your gaze and back away slowly, the fail whale will appear.
Blue screens lit up my work computer throughout the weekend and the beginning of the week. I also caught some version of the plague Saturday night, but meetings and computer repair issues brought my germy-body to the office on Monday and Tuesday.
At times the sinus pressure was so great that my right eye would start pouring as I talked to coworkers. I’m pretty sure they wanted to swat me away with a Lysol wipe.
I love making these lists because looking back at my prior choices always amuses me. This was the year of the hiphop dance anthems for me. We got to shimmy and shake to a few good ones.
Long nights in the studio.
I was furious with myself for not finishing a remix on time tonight. The remix is for a competition and the deadline is tomorrow. I put a lot of time into the remix, but the vocals are probably unsalvageable.
I need to write a thank you letter to 16 Bit Lolitas. Their song, “Nobody Seems to Care” pulled me through countless study sessions and finals.
I spent the bulk of the night working on a Steel Lord remix and chatting online.
Time for a new boomkat list. I’m feeling inspired.
It’s all about Katy B right now. Actually, most of the top 20 songs for me right now are from England. Weird times.
Track list after the jump.
What a bizarre two weeks.
I had my normal schedule of work, class, lake trips, Jeset Bar dance-offs, and adventures around the metro:
The morning dog walk was a disaster.
I load the dogs into the car and the radio informs me that the air temperate is -10 with a -25 wind chill.
Nick suggested that if I ever did drag, that I should perform Janelle Monae’s “Cold War.” That song is alright, but this is my drag top 10:
