I spent my first 4th of July weekend in Dallas.
There were pool parties, new brunch places, drag shows, and even a trip to Fort Worth.
It was fun, yet exhausting. I was relieved when the weekend was over.
The iLume Pool was hit-and-miss.
The pool party on Saturday was packed, but the pool was mostly empty on Monday due to a competing event. Apparently a gay doctor hosts an annual pool party at his house in Oak Cliff, which is where everyone was at. This left only couples with kids at the pool, and a very underwhelmed Taphouse bartender staffing the pool bar.
Some neighbors invited us to the doctor’s pool party but we felt too weird randomly showing up at someone’s house. Our neighbors reported that it was a raucous drunkfest, which we didn’t mind skipping.
The police presence in the gayborhood is still intense.
One night we went to Italia Express after the bar and found the restaurant full of cops. There was a young guy on the floor who had been tased and several of his friends were being interrogated.
The employees looked extremely bored and annoyed. This was typically the busiest part of the night for the pizzeria, but they had cops taking up all of the seating and scaring all of the potential drunk customers away.
Except us.
This coming weekend may be just as eventful – I turn 30 on Saturday!
